DIPLOMA COURSE IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND HORTICULTURE

GENERAL

Coverage: This course facilitates design and implementation of home gardens, landscaping the urban centres, and other landscape projects at Macro, Meso and Micro Levels.

Duration:    Two years (Part-time)

Medium:   English language

Course Fee:  Rs.30,000.00 Payable in two installments. (Inclusive of registration and examination fees)

Minimum Qualifications:    Minimum 3 subjects in G.C.E. (A/L) or G.C.E. (O/L) with any other certificate equivalent to or higher than G.C.E. (A/L)

COURSE STRUCTURE

  • Lectures, discussions, exercises, assignments, video films etc.

  • A 2-day visit to a Historic Landscape Garden outside Colombo

  • Practical sessions at RBG and CHPB for a period of 01 month

  • Test

  • Project/Practical assignments

Performance Evaluation

(a) 3-hour written test: (Each subject out of 100 marks, total marks 400)

  1. Basic Biology (Test – 100 marks)

  2. Ecology (Test – 100 marks)

  3. Soft Landscape Materials & Technology (Test/Assignment – 100 marks)

  4. Hard Landscape Materials & Technology (Test – 100 marks)

(b) Project/Practical assignments:  (Total marks 1000)

  1. Submission of project report on an appreciation of a traditional landscape garden in Sri Lanka– (one month) – (100 marks)

  2. Assignment on Man and Environment – (100 marks)

  3. Practical test on plant identification , 5 hours –(200 marks)

  4. Landscape Design (05 Projects/Assignments – 500 marks)

  5. Dissertation (100 marks)

 Pass Marks:   Individual subject/assignment 40%

Overall requirement – 50% of the total of 1400 marks

Certificate:   Diploma in Landscape Design and Horticulture will be awarded on successful completion of the course by obtaining required marks.

NOTES FOR INFORMATION

  • All soft landscaping lectures will be held at the Centre for Housing Planning and Building and some of the practical sessions will be conducted at the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG), Peradeniya as indicated in the structure above.  Participants will be notified in advance of these practical sessions.

  • Transport during lectures at RBG will have to be arranged by the participants on their own cost.  Transport for the site visits will be organized by the centre.

  • All expenses will have to be borne by the participants with regard to food and lodging during lectures at RBG and site visits.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE DIPLOMA

Only the participants who have successfully completed the full course will be eligible for the Diploma Certificate.
